Freely We Receive, Freely We Give ...but why?

Have you ever noticed how giving can feel both amazing and a little uncomfortable? One minute we’re all in, “Sure, I’ll help!” and the next, we’re calculating time, effort, or what it might cost us. It’s human nature! But then, Jesus reminds us of something beautifully simple that cuts through all that overthinking: “Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8) Those words hold the secret to joyful generosity and they turn giving from a chore into a celebration.

Let’s be honest — giving isn’t always easy. Whether it’s our time, money, energy, or attention, we all feel that little tug of hesitation sometimes. “What if I need this later?” or “I’ve already done enough this week!” But then comes that gentle nudge from Scripture the simple, beautiful reminder from Jesus:

“Freely you have received, freely give.” — Matthew 10:8

Those words are short, but wow, they pack a punch! When Jesus spoke them to His disciples, He was sending them out to heal, teach, and bless others — no payment required. Why? Because everything they had — every gift, every ounce of wisdom, every miracle-working moment — came from God first. They didn’t earn it. They received it freely.

And that’s the heart of Christian giving — we’re not just being “nice” or doing a “good deed.” We’re passing on what was first given to us.

Think about it: God gave us salvation, grace, forgiveness, love, and even our daily breath all without charging a fee or asking us to earn it. When we really let that sink in, generosity never feels like an obligation but rather it becomes this joyful echo of God’s heart through ours.

Giving doesn’t always mean money either. It’s lending an ear to someone who needs to talk, sharing encouragement, offering your skills to help someone out, or forgiving when it costs you pride. Every act of generosity says, “God has given me so much I can’t help but share it.”

And the funny thing? The more freely we give, the more we receive. Not always in material things, but in peace, joy, and that deep sense of connection with God and others. It’s like God keeps refilling our hands so that we can keep pouring out blessings to others and what an enormous blessing that is.
